Box Score First-year forward Jessica Robichaud scored two powerplay goals and added one assist as the No. 5 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 4-1 on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 6) at Columbia Ice Field.
With the win, the Blues secure a playoff berth with a 10-3-4-3 record. Toronto currently sits in third place in the OUA standings, one point behind Nipissing (11-1-5-5) with two games in hand.
Fourth-year forward Taylor Day opened the scoring 3:18 into the game, finishing off a nice 2-on-1 pass from Sonja Weidenfelder with a backhand into the top corner.
With just over two minutes remaining in the opening frame, Robichaud gave the Blues a 2-0 lead, tipping in an Autumn Garnham point shot on the poweperplay.
Robichaud scored her second goal of the game, and fourth of the season, midway through the second period, but the Warriors responded just over a minute later when Rachel Marriott found the back of the net on a Warriors man advantage. The Blues led 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Both teams battled hard through the third period and the Blues secured the victory with a Lauren Straatman empty-net goal.
Rookie netminder Valencia Yordanov made 29 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Friday, February 12 as they host the Laurier Golden Hawks at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
