GAME 3 HEARTBREAK FOR BLUES

Box Score In a triple overtime affair at Varsity Arena, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey season came to an abrupt halt as they fell 2-1 to the Laurier Golden Hawks in Game 3 of their OUA quarter-final matchup on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 28).

In the early goings, Toronto applied serious pressure, outshooting the Hawks 8-3 in the first period. U of T's best chance in the frame came in the closing minutes during a scramble in front of Laurier goaltender Amanda Smith but Blues leading goal scorer Sonja Weidenfelder sent the backhand attempt off the crossbar to just miss the early go-ahead goal. Both teams entered the first intermission deadlocked at 0-0.

After an even second period which saw no change in the score, the Varsity Blues finally solved Smith early in the third.

Second-year forward Meagan O'Brien made a strong drive into the Laurier zone before sending a tough angle shot onto the Golden Hawks net where fellow second-year forward Lauren Straatman was able to bang home the big rebound handing the Blues a big 1-0 lead.

However, Laurier would also solve Toronto netminder Valencia Yordanov in the period as Golden Hawk rookie Danielle Wark beat the Blues backstop to tie things back up and send the game into overtime for the third straight game.

Once again the equally matched foes found themselves in a stalemate after two overtime periods.

But in the third overtime third-year Golden Hawk Dollee Meigs played the hero notching the series-winner three-minutes into the overtime frame.

Blues goalie Yordanov finished the night making 23 saves, while her Laurier counterpart Smith collected 41.
