Fifth-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel scored two goals and Taylor Day potted the overtime winner to lead the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team to a 3-2  victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in Game 1 of their OUA quarter-final series on Wednesday night (Feb. 24) at Varsity Arena.

The Blues now head to Waterloo for Game 2 this Friday, February 26. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. The game will also be streamed live on OUA.tv.

Tied 2-2 since the second intermission, fourth-year forward Taylor Day broke the deadlock with 1:50 remaining in the first overtime period. The Ilderton, Ont., native buried an Autumn Garnham rebound to seal the Game 1 victory.

The Varsity Blues opened the scoring midway through the first period when Scheffel tipped in a Cristine Chao point shot on the powerplay.

That lead didn't last long though, as Laurier capitalized on some Toronto penalty trouble. Fourth-year Hawks forward Robyn Degagne finished off a 2-on-1 with Giuliana Pallotta with a nice backhand into the top of the net.

Less than two minutes later just as Toronto's penalty expired, Laurier notched the go-ahead goal when Dollee Meigs buried a rebound off a Jacky Normandeau point shot. The Hawks were up, 2-1, after 20 minutes.

The Blues evened the score early in the second period. Scheffel found herself all alone with Hawks netminder Amanda Smith. Smith made the save, but the rebound went off a Hawks defenceman and into the net.

First-year Blues goalie Valencia Yordanov made 19 saves in the win, while Smith posted 26 in the loss.
