Box Score The No. 4 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team dropped a narrow 4-3 shootout decision to the UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday night (Feb. 20) in Oshawa, Ont.
The Blues wrap up the regular season in second place with a 12-4-4-4 record and will host the seventh-seeded Laurier Golden Hawks (10-3-9-2) in a best-of-three OUA quarter-final series this coming week.
Toronto opened the scoring 13:44 into the game when fifth-year veteran forward Jacqueline Scheffel found the back of the net and Toronto held a 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes.
UOIT got on the board early in the second with a goal off the stick of Nicole Gorda. Then, the flood gates opened late in the second frame as Taylor Day's go-ahead goal was matched by UOIT's Kassidy Nauboris. Sophomore Lauren Straatman then gave Toronto back the lead, 3-2, with just 23 seconds remaining in the period.
The Ridgebacks evened the score and forced extra time when Rachel Budden found the back of the net with just 50 seconds to go in regulation, and Gorda would be the lone scorer in the shootout to secure the Ridgebacks win.
Blues netminder Katey Teekasingh posted 22 saves in the loss.Â
