YORDANOV SHINES IN WIN OVER GAELS

Box Score First-year netminder Valencia Yordanov notched 33 saves and earned her first career shutout as the No. 4 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Queen's Gaels 2-0 on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 14) in Kingston, Ont.

With the win, the Blues improve to 11-4-4-3 and sit tied for second place with the Nipissing Lakers with two games in hand.

After a scoreless first period, which saw Yordanov make 14 saves, fifth-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel opened the scoring 11:11 into the second frame, notching her third goal of the season assisted by Cara Clarke and Kassie Roache.

Toronto led 1-0 after 40 minutes of action.

Fourth-year Blues forward Taylor Day added an insurance marker, scoring an empty-netter with 1:02 remaining in the third period.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Friday, February 19 when they host the York Lions at Varsity Arena. The Blues will honour graduating seniors Sonja Weidenfelder, Jacqueline Scheffel, April Looije and Caitlin Maikawa in a special pre-game ceremony before puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
