Following a narrow 1-0 loss to the visiting Waterloo Warriors this past week (Nov. 11), U of T finds itself in a logjam in the middle of the OUA standings, sitting in a three-way tie for seventh in the OUA with a 4-0-4-0 (W-OTW-L-OTL) record.
On a mission to break into the top five, the Varsity Blues currently sit just three points away from fourth and, with a game-in-hand on many of their OUA counterparts, a win this weekend will begin to create separation from the pack.
Toronto has established themselves as a defensive juggernaut in the province having surrendered the least goals in the OUA (13) so far this season.
Much of that success stems from the incredible play of second-year netminder Valencia Yordanov who leads the province in saves (234) placing her third in the country in save percentage (.948) while also ranking third in the OUA in goals-against average (1.43). With three shutouts already this season against Queen's and nationally ranked opponents in No. 5 Guelph and No. 10 Western, Yordanov appears primed for another strong showing against the Golden Hawks who sit dead-last in the OUA in goals (9) this season.
Up front, veteran forwards Taylor Day and captain Kristi Riseley continue to lead a young Varsity Blues attack. Having recently surpassed 80 career regular season points, Day provides incredible creativity in her attack, while the high-motored Riseley possesses one of the best two-way games in the entire province.
Meanwhile for the Golden Hawks, who are currently in last place in the OUA with a 0-1-5-1 record, their stagnant offence will need to produce more chances as they currently sit last in shots (162) in the province.
The Varsity Blues will next make a short trip up the road to faceoff with the York Lions next Saturday, November 26 at Canlan Ice Sports in York. The puck drops with the 1-1-5-2 Lions at 2 p.m. with the game streamed live on OUA.tv.
