Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday night (Nov. 14) at Varsity Arena.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 5-1-2-1 (W-L-OTW-OTL), while the Warriors improve to 5-3-0-1 on the season.
The Blues opened the scoring just 5:43 into the contest as fourth-year forward Sonja Weidenfelder sent a wide-angled shot that hit Rebecca Bouwhuis pad and Blues defenceman Julia Szulewska was there to bury the round.
The Warriors responded 2:17 later when Kaitlyn McDonell found Paul LaGamba in the high slot, who one-timed it under Valencia Yodanov's arm and into the net.
The two teams were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Toronto went ahead early in the second period when fifth-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel came out from behind the net and the Blues jammed the puck past Bouwhuis. U of T was up 2-1 heading into the final frame.
The Warriors evened the score on the powerplay with just 2:11 to go as Rachel Marriott found McDonell up high and she sent a shot through traffic to find the back of the net and force OT.
LaGamba proved to be the game's hero, receiving a 2-on-1 feed from Michelle Tanel and slotting the puck into the mesh in the first overtime period. Â
Yordanov posted 24 saves in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Sunday, November 22 when they travel north to take on the York Lions at Canlan Ice Centre. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
