MEN’S VOLLEYBALL DROPS THREE CLOSE SETS TO NO. 1 MARAUDERS

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's volleyball team fell 3-0 (27-29, 22-25, 17-25) to the No. 1 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 14) at Goldring Centre.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 2-3, while the Marauders improve to 6-0 in the early goings of the OUA men's volleyball season.

Fifth-year left side hitter Stefan Ristic led the Blues with 11 kills, one ace and seven digs, while third-year right side hitter William Colucci had eight kills, two blocks and eight digs. Both Zia Karim and Alex Ferris notched five kills, with Ferris adding a team-high nine digs.

Fifth-year setter Aleksa Miladinovic tallied 34 assists, five digs and two aces in the loss.

Toronto and McMaster were neck and neck in the first set, with a nice kill from Nate Virgo giving the home team a narrow 16-15 lead at the technical timeout. Neither team held more than a two-point advantage until, a Jayson McCarthy kill and Alexander Elliott serving ace sealed the first set win, 29-27, for the Marauders.

The second set proved just as close as the first with McMaster building another 16-15 advantage at the break. A Ristic ace capped off a 5-2 run for the Blues as they led 20-18 late in the second set, but the Marauders came right back with a 7-2 streak of their own to take the second set 25-22.

The two teams were deadlocked at 7-7 early in the third set, but the Marauders went on a 9-1 run to take a 16-8 lead at the tech timeout. U of T attempted to rally a brought the game within five (14-19), but McMaster stood tall to hold on for the 25-17 third set win.

The Marauders were led by fourth-year middle Danny Demyaneko's 14.5 points. Stephen Maar notched 11 kills, while Andrew Kocur recorded 36 assists and six digs in the victory.

The Varsity Blues are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host the Waterloo Warriors at Goldring Centre. Opening serve is set for 3 p.m.
