The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team dropped their first game of the season, 2-1, to the visiting Brock Badgers ON Friday night (Nov. 13) at Varsity Arena.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 5-1-2-0 (W-L-OTW-OTL) but remain atop the OUA standings, while the Badgers improve to 3-5-1-0 and move into ninth place.

The Blues opened the game providing a steady stream of pressure on the Badgers, controlling possession and sending shot after shot on Brock goaltender Jensen Murphy. Murphy's strong game would persist throughout as she finished with 29 saves on 30 shots.

The Badgers opened the scoring midway through the first period when Brittany Gillmor capitalized on a rare chance in the U of T slot, beating first-year Blues goalie Hailey Farrelly unassisted.

Toronto would finally solve Murphy midway through the second when veteran Jacqueline Scheffel found herself right out in front of the Brock net and one-timed a nice centering pass from Kassandra Roache into the back of the net. The equalizer marked Scheffel's second of the season and 20th career goal.

The Blues continued with the pressure, challenging Murphy from the point and the slot, but the Brock goaltender returned to her early-game form.

U of T found themselves on the powerplay late in the second period, but Brock forward Sophie Herbert pressured Toronto's point and would intercept a pass and take off to score on a breakaway for the eventual game-winner.

The third saw much of the same as Toronto continued to search for the equalizer, but Murphy stood tall to hold on for the win.

Farrelly posted eight saves in the loss.

The Varsity Blues will look to bounce back tomorrow when they host the Waterloo Warriors at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
