Box Score The No. 5 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team extended their unbeaten streak to seven games as they defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-1 on Sunday night (Nov. 1) in Waterloo, Ont.
The Blues improve to 5-0-2-0 (W-L-OTW-OTL) and remain in first place in the OUA standings, the only team undefeated in 2015-16.
After two scoreless periods, fourth-year forward Sonja Weidenfelder opened the scoring with a powerplay goal 1:20 into the third frame.
Sophomore standout Lauren Straatman added her first goal of the season just over four minutes later. The Thorndale, Ont., native received a nice pass from Taylor Day and made no mistake in finding the back of the net on the shorthanded opportunity. Day had three assists in the victory.
The Golden Hawks spoiled the shut out with a powerplay marker off the stick of Kaitlyn Hatzes with just over three minutes remaining; however, Weidenfelder notched her second of the game less than a minute later to round out the 3-1 victory.
First-year netminder Hailey Farrelly notched her second win in as many starts, posting 30 saves in the victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, November 13 when they host the Brock Badgers at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
