Box Score Team captain Kristi Riseley scored with 2:35 remaining in the game to lead the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Thursday night at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
After a scoreless first period, the Blues got on the board just 38 seconds into the second when fourth-year forward Taylor Day of Ilderton, Ont., squeaked in a shot at the side of the net. Toronto carried that lead into the second intermission.
Ryerson would spoil the shut out midway through the third period with a goal off the stick of Sarah McGilvray; however, Riseley would be the game's hero, wiring a high shot off Rams goalie Alex Armstrong that trickled down her back and into the net.
Rookie netminder Valencia Yordanov posted 24 saves in her first career win.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Saturday, October 10 as they head to Guelph, Ont., to take on the Gryphons. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
