Box Score The No. 5 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team upset the No. 1 and CIS defending champion Western Mustangs 3-0 on Sunday evening (Oct. 25) in London, Ont.
With the win, the Blues remain undefeated with a 6-0-0 record and remain in sole possession of first place in the OUA standings.
Fourth-year forward Taylor Day scored one goal, the eventual game-winner, and added one assist, while rookie goalie Hailey Farrelly posted 23 saves and a shutout in her first career start.
After a scoreless first period, Day opened the scoring for the Blues with a powerplay goal 13:42 into the second frame. With two Mustangs in the box, the Ilderton, Ont., native tipped in a Cristine Chao point shot on the 5-on-3 advantage and Toronto carried the 1-0 lead into the second intermission.
The Blues went up by two midway through the third period when Day sent a pass to fellow veteran forward Sonja Weidenfelder, who one-timed it past CIS all-Canadian goalie Kelly Campbell while crashing the net.
Team captain Kristi Riseley added an insurance marker, and empty-net goal, with under two minutes remaining to seal Toronto's sixth straight win.
The Varsity Blues are back in action next Sunday, November 1 as they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
