The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's tennis teams head to the OUA championships, October 16 -18, hosted by York University at Mayfair Parkway and Mayfair East.
The men's team enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed, finishing the regular season with a 6-1 record. Â They will face the UOIT Ridgebacks in Round 1.
Third-year veteran and 2013 OUA MVP Zain Manji will be leaned on to lead the team at the tournament. Manji most recently led the Varsity Blues in a 7-0 sweep of the Montreal Carabins, pairing with first-year Maxim Uslamin to win the team's opening doubles match, before also winning a three-set singles match.
With fellow veterans Cameron Chiang, Ivan Markovic, and Nick Somody joining Manji, expectations will see the Varsity Blues aiming for the podium after a fourth-place finish at last year's OUA championships.
On the women's side, the Varsity Blues are looking to duplicate or even better their third-place finish in 2014.
U of T will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed, finishing the regular season with a 3-3 record, which included decisive victories over McMaster, McGill, and Waterloo. Â The Blues are set to face the Waterloo Warriors in Round 1 of the championship.
Sixth-year veteran Victoria Au has proven to be the team's leader and will once again be first on the court for the Varsity Blues. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia native Antonina Gorshenina and second-year Shreya Nayak have also showcased strong performances during league play.
Play begins Friday at 12:30 p.m. and will conclude with the bronze and gold medal games on Sunday evening.
