BLUES HOST QUEEN’S, UOIT IN HOME-OPENING WEEKEND

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team hosts the Queen's Gaels and UOIT Ridgebacks this weekend, October 16-17, at Varsity Arena.

Toronto takes on the Gaels Friday night (Oct. 16) at 7:30 p.m., before hosting the Ridgebacks Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale at varsityblues.ca/tickets. U of T students are FREE with a valid T-Card. Both games will also be streamed live on OUA.tv.

The Blues are 2-0-0 to start the season after two road wins over the Ryerson Rams and Guelph Gryphons last week.

First-year goaltender Valencia Yordanov garnered athlete of the week honours, posting a .957 save percentage in her first two OUA starts.

A trio of veteran forwards lead the Blues as Sonja Weidenfelder, Kristi Riseley and Taylor Day each scored one goal and added one assist for two points on opening weekend.

The Queen's Gaels are also 2-0-0 after two victories over the Brock Badgers and York Lions last weekend. Third-year forward Nadia Larocca leads the team, scoring three of their four goals so far this season.

Fifth-year netminder Caitlyn Lahonen started both games for the Gaels, posting 44 saves and holding a .978 save percentage.

The UOIT Ridgebacks are 1-1-0 to start 2015-16, after a 3-2 win over York and a 3-1 loss to Brock. Second-year forward Chelsea Ball leads the Ridgebacks in the early goings, with one goal and one assist.

Tory Campbell and Cassie Charette split the first two games and both hold .917 save percentages.
