Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 3-1 on Saturday, October 10 at Gryphon Centre Arena.
The win improves Toronto to 2-0-0 in the early goings of the regular season and served as sweet revenge after the Gryphons knocked Toronto out of the playoffs in last year's OUA semi-final series.
Gryphons forward Kaitlin Lowey opened the scoring just 3:31 into the contest as she received the puck in the high slot and wired it top shelf. The Blues were quick to respond, however, as fifth-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel sent a booming shot through traffic that hit the post and went in.
Less than three minutes later, Taylor Day fed Sonja Weidenfelder the puck on a 2-on-1 opportunity, and Weidenfelder made no mistake, backhanding it past Gryphons goalie Stephanie Nehring to put Toronto up by one. U of T led 2-1 after the first period.
The Gryphons had a great chance to go ahead early in the second on a 2-on-1 opportunity, but rookie goalie Valencia Yordanov came up with a nice pad save to keep the Blues up by one.
Toronto took a two-goal lead in the final minutes of the period when sophomore defenceman Julia Szulewska sent a point shot through traffic to beat Nehring. U of T was up 3-1 heading into the final frame.
Guelph pressured early in the third period but Yordanov stood tall, posting 20 saves in her second straight victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, October 16 when they host the Queen's Gaels in their 2015-16 home opener at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be streamed live on OUA.tv.Â
