WOMEN'S HOCKEY KEEPS STREAK ALIVE

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team notched their fifth straight win, defeating the Windsor Lancers 3-1 on Saturday, January 31 at South Windsor Arena.

With the win, the Blues improve to 15-3-3 and move into sole possession of second place with three games remaining in the regular season.

Windsor opened the scoring on their first powerplay chance of the game, taking a 1-0 lead 3:42 into the contest.

The Blues evened the score just before the first period buzzer when rookie Becki Bowering tipped in an April Looije shot for her first career goal as a Varsity Blue.

Toronto took the lead midway through the second frame when Taylor Day batted the puck out of the air and into the net on the powerplay. U of T led 2-1 heading into the final frame.

Fourth-year forward Sonja Weidenfelder padded U of T's lead, scoring her team-leading eighth goal of the season seven minutes into the third period. A few minutes later, Blues netminder Katey Teekasingh made a nice save on a Candice Chevalier breakaway.

Teekasingh posted 23 saves in the win.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Saturday, February 7 as they travel to North Bay, Ont., to take on the Nipissing Lakers. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
