Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team clinched an OUA playoff berth with a 2-1 shootout win over the No. 3 nationally ranked Western Mustangs on Friday night (Jan. 30) in London, Ont.
Veteran forwards Taylor Day and Kristi Riseley both scored in the shootout to seal the win for Toronto.
The Blues improve to 14-3-3 and move into a tie for second place in the OUA standings.
Both teams remained scoreless until 6:05 remaining in regulation. Fourth-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel one-timed an Amanda Ricker pass to beat Western netminder Kelly Campbell and take a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs did respond on a 6-on-5 advantage with 30 seconds to go as Kendra Broad banged home a rebound to force overtime.
The extra five minutes solved nothing and Blues netminder Nicole Kesteris stopped both Mustangs shooters to add to her 19-save performance in the win.
The Varsity Blues are back in action tomorrow as they head to Windsor, Ont., to take on the Lancers. Game time is set for 4 p.m.Â
