Fifth-year netminder Nicole Kesteris earned her 50th career regular season win in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors Sunday afternoon (Jan. 25) at Varsity Arena.

The Blues honoured Kesteris in a pre-game ceremony. Today marked her last regular season home game as a Varsity Blue as she is set to represent Canada at the 2015 Winter Universiade early next month in Grenada, Spain. The Aurora, Ont., native made 14 saves and notched her third shutout of the season.

"Nicole did a great job today," said Varsity Blues head coach Vicky Sunohara. "What a great way to end the regular season at home with a shutout. She provides such confidence and I think it ripples throughout the team. We're really excited that she was chosen to represented Canada at the FISU Games."

Fourth-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel opened the scoring 1:58 into the game when she received a pass from Katherine Gale and skated down the ice, firing the puck short side to beat Warriors starting netminder Rebecca Bouwhuis.

U of T extended their lead late in the first frame when veteran Amanda Ricker found Alessandra Bianchi in front of the net and she wired a shot into the top corner of the net.

With the win, the Blues improve to 13-3-3 and move into a three-way tie for second place in the OUA standings.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Friday, January 30 as they head to London, Ont., to take on the first-place and No. 3 nationally ranked Western Mustangs. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
