The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the York Lions 4-3 in overtime in a pre-season match-up on Wednesday, September 24 at Canlan Ice Sports.
Â
The win marks U of T's first of the preseason, after falling 4-0 to Manitoba twice this past weekend.
Â
Third-year Clarkson University transfer Patrick Marsh opened the scoring for the Blues midway through the first period, and veteran Jeff Brown padded the lead with another tally less than a minute later. Toronto held the 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of action.
Â
The Lions finally got on the board early in the second period with a goal off the stick of Calvin Higley. The Blues led 2-1 heading into the third period.
Â
Marsh regained Toronto's two-goal lead five minutes into the third period; however York scored two goals within 1:17 of each other to even the score and force overtime.
Â
Brown proved to be the overtime hero, taking a pass from Paul Van De Velde before finding the back of the net in the U of T victory.
Â
Michael Nishi posted 33 saves in the win.
Â
The Varsity Blues return to action this weekend (Sept. 27-28) as they head back to Canlan Ice Sports for the York Invitational. Â The Blues open the tournament versus Ryerson at 2 p.m. on Saturday.Â
