Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 2-1 in Game 3 of the OUA semifinal series with the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday night in Waterloo, Ont.
Laurier's Jessie Hurrell scored the game-winning goal as she walked the seam off a faceoff and found the mesh early in the third period.
The Blues opened the scoring on the first powerplay opportunity 2:50 into the game as Sonja Weidenfelder wired a shot from the point through traffic to beat Laurier goaltender Amanda Smith.
The Hawks nearly evened the score as Devon Skeats and Hurrell found themselves on a 2-on-0, but U of T netminder and OUA first team all-star Nicole Kesteris came up with the save.Â
The Hawks did net the equalizer a minute later as Blair Connelly sent a shot from the point that bounced off Tammy Freiburger and in. The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 after 20 minutes of action.
Toronto's best chance of the second period came in the last minute as Weidenfelder and and Taylor Day found themselves on a 2-on-1, but Day could not convert on Weidenfelder's cantering pass and the game remained even heading into the final frame.
The Blues end the season with their best finish since the 2007-08 season, while the Hawks advance to the OUA final best-of-three series versus the Queen's Gaels.Â
