Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs 4-1 on Saturday, February 2 at Thompson Arena in London, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 17-5-1 and move into third place, one point ahead of the No. 5 Queen's Gaels. Toronto squares off against Queen's in their final game of the regular season next Sunday, February 8 at 2 p.m. at Varsity Arena.
Fourth-year forward Amanda Ricker opened the scoring 18:59 into the game and Jacqueline Scheffel notched another just 34 seconds later to give the Blues a 2-0 lead after the first period.
Team captain Kelly O'Hanlon buried a rebound on the powerplay with five minutes remaining in the second period as U of T held a three-goal lead heading into the final frame.
Western spoiled the shut out with a powerplay goal of the own, off the stick of Jessica Sorensen, but fifth-year veteran Ragan Danford added an empty-netter in the dying seconds to seal the 4-1 win and season series with the Mustangs.
Fourth-year netminder Nicole Kesteris made 24 saves in the win.
The Blues will honour their graduating players in a special pre-game ceremony next Sunday, February 9.
