Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team dropped an 85-63 decision to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, November 8 in Waterloo, Ont.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 1-1 after Week 1 of OUA women's basketball action. Toronto opened their season with a 75-63 victory over Waterloo last night.
For the second consecutive night, fifth-year guard and two-time OUA all-star Jill Stratton of Etobicoke, Ont., led the Blues, knocking down 26 points. The kinesiology major was 9-for-18 from the floor, including five three-pointers and added seven rebounds and three steals.
Fellow veteran guard Jasmine Lewin (Brampton, Ont.) tallied 13 points and four boards, with Selali Acolatse recording nine points and six boards in the loss.
Down 10-2 early in the first quarter, the Blues rallied led by four Stratton three-pointers and trailed by two (23-21) heading into the second. Laurier went on a 10-5 run and the Blues played catch up from there as the home team took a 41-34 lead into halftime.
Stratton's fifth three-pointer of the night brought the game within three early in the third quarter, but that was as close as U of T would come. Laurier came up with two 20+ quarters in the second half en route to the win.
The Hawks were led by Kaitlyn Schenck's 19-point performance. Nicole Morrison had 18 points, with Alexandra Spadaro adding 14 in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, November 14 as they host the CIS defending champion Windsor Lancers in their 2014-15 home opener at the brand new Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale here. The game will also be streamed live on OUA.tv.Â
