Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the York Lions 2-1 in a shoot out on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 29) at Canlan Ice Sports.
With the win, the Blues improve to 7-3-2 and jump from seventh into a tie for fourth in the OUA standings. The Lions drop to 6-5-2 and sit seventh.
Blues leading scorer Kristi Riseley opened the scoring 4:06 into the game, notching her fifth goal of the season, but the Lions evened the score seven minutes later with a goal off the stick of Kristen Barabara.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net and the game needed a shoot out to decide the winner.
After York's Rianna Langford scored to give the Lions the upperhand, rookie Julia Szulewska kept the game alive for the Blues. Blues netminder Nicole Kesteris came up with a big stop on York's Marian Krancevich and veteran forward Jacqueline Scheffel sealed the win with the shoot out winner.
Kesteris posted 24 saves in the win. The Blues also kept OUA leading scorer Lisa Stathopulos off the score sheet and ended her seven-game point streak.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they head to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.Â
