Box Score Photo GalleryThe University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to the Windsor Lancers on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 16) at Varsity Arena.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 5-3-1, while the Lancers improve 7-2-1 so far this season.
Tied 3-3 after overtime, Windsor's Krystin Lawrence was the lone goal scorer in the shoot out to seal the win.
Toronto opened the scoring nine minutes into the game as Kristi Riseley (Pickering, Ont.) found Sonja Weidenfelder (Toronto) all alone at the side of the net for the one-time goal. Third-year forward and Toronto native Alessanda Bianchi extended the Blues lead five minutes later as she buried a Lauren Straatman (Thorndale, Ont.) rebound in front of the net.
U of T led 2-0 after the first period.
The Lancers got on the board 5:20 into the second frame as Lawrence, a rookie forward from Tecumseh, Ont., sent a shot through traffic to find the back of the net.
Lawrence had a partial breakaway four minutes later but Blues defenceman Caitlin Maikawa made a nice check to clear the puck out of harm's way.
Windsor did manage to even the score when third-year forward Jillian Rops buried a rebound off a Zoe Ellis point shot with 2:40 to go in the frame. The two teams remained deadlocked at 2-2 heading into the final frame.
Windsor's Jenny MacKnight gave the visiting team a 3-2 lead with a goal 1:22 into the third, but Riseley responded for the Blues, capitalizing on a Lancers turnover and sending a nifty backhand into the net.
Second-year Blues goaltender Katey Teekasingh made 29 saves in her first start of the season.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Friday, November 21 as they host the Laurentian Voyageurs at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
