Box Score Kristi Riseley and Taylor Day each notched two assists and scored in the shootout in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Brock Badgers on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 19) at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 3-0-0 and move into a tie with the Queen's Gaels for first place in the OUA standings.
The Blues opened the scoring late in the second period as Day fed Mary Claire Geneau a centering pass and she wired it into the net. U of T led 1-0 heading into the third period.
The Badgers evened the score 6:58 into the third on a powerplay opportunity as Brittney Cabral streaked over the blue line and found an open hole at the side of the net.
Toronto regained the lead when Sonja Weidenfelder banged in a rebound off a Riseley shot, but Brock forced overtime as Jessica Finkel scored off of the face off on a 6-on-4 opportunity with 59 seconds remaining in regulation.
OT solved nothing and Riseley and Day stepped up with two beautiful goals in the shootout.
Fifth-year Blues netminder Nicole Kesteris made 32 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues now head on a four-game road streak, first taking on the Queen's Gaels next Saturday, October 25 in Kingston, Ont. The game will be streamed live on OUA.tv, starting with puck drop at 3 p.m.
