The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's basketball teams will host the Carleton Ravens and the Ottawa Gee-Gees this weekend (Jan.31 –Feb1) at the Athletic Center Sports Gym.
The teams will face-off against the Ravens on Friday night before taking on the Gee-Gees on Saturday. The women will take to the court first at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m. on both nights.
Both Varsity Blues teams head into the weekend after securing four points each last Friday and Saturday when they defeated Algoma and Laurentian.
Toronto's women improved to 8-8 and remain in fourth place in the OUA East division.
Fourth-year guard Jill Stratton (Etobicoke, Ont.) led all players with 19 points in the Blues 77-45 win over the Voyageurs. Stratton leads the Blues and ranks 11th in OUA with 14.2 points per game, while also tallying 47 assists and 41 steals so far this season.
Veteran forward Alicia Van Kampen (Amaranth, Ont.) notched a career-high 18 points in the Blues ictory over the Thunderbirds. Van Kampen averages 5.4 rebounds per game and has put up nine blocks, while teammate Rachel Sider (New Westminster, B.C.) has been averaging a solid 9.4 points per game and 5.2 boards per game.
The Blues defeated the then No. 8 Gee-Gees, 52-45, in their first meeting of the season on January 17, before falling in a close one-point affair (57-56) to the now No.10 Ravens.
The Blues men are now 4-12 on the season and are tied with the Thunderbirds for seventh place in the OUA East division.
Fifth-year guard Alex Hill (Toronto) notched a career-high 36 points in the Blues match-up with the Voyageurs. Hill drained the tying basket on a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, and went onto drain four three's in overtime to lead Toronto to their second straight win.
Hill leads the Blues and the OUA in scoring and is second in the CIS, averaging 26.1 points per game.
Denis Ankrah (Etobicoke, Ont.) has been steady on the defenisve glass and leads Toronto's with six boards per game, while rookie Nick Burke (Hamilton, Ont.) has 30 steals and 47 assists at this point in the season.
When they last met, the Blues fell 113-75 to the No. 2 Gee-Gees and 100-60 to the No. 1 ranked Ravens.
