BLUES DROP FIVE SET THRILLER

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-18, 15-25, 26-28, 25-19, 11-15) to the York Lions on Sunday afternoon (Jan.12) at Tait McKenzie Centre.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 4-9 and sit in seventh place, while the Lions improve to 9-3 and are in a three way tie for second place.

Toronto took an early lead in the first set and kept the Lions at bay to take the set 25-18. York came back in the second set to win it 15-25. The third set remained close with the Lions eventually taking it 26-28. The Blues maintained a lead during the fourth set and come out on top 25-19 to force the game into a fifth set. After a  tight battle the Lions took the fifth set 11-15.

Dave Merritt led the Blues with 14 kills, two serving aces and five digs while teammate Kyle Fick had 12 kills and six digs.

Matthew Vares dominated the libero position making 18 digs and setter Michael Denton added 50 assists in the loss.

The Lions were led by Ray Szeto who had 25 kills and 6 digs.

The Blues return to action next weekend as they host the McMaster Marauders on January 18, at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game is set for 8 p.m.
