Fourth-year middie Michael Buwalda scored five goals in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 9-8 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday, September 22 in Sudbury, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 2-2 on the season.
Down 5-2 midway through the second quarter, the Blues began to rally, starting when recent NLL draftee A.J. Masson (Newmarket) found the back of the net to bring the game within two at halftime.
Buwalda (Scarborough) carried that momentum over, netting two in the first five minutes of the third quarter to even the score. The Voyageurs added one more and were up 6-5 heading into the final frame.
A fourth-year kinesiology major, Buwalda again opened the quarter with a tally, but the Voyageurs responded with back-to-back powerplay markers to take a 8-6 lead with 13 minutes to go. Buwalda brought the game within one with 10:30 to go and rookie Jordan Tingle of Toronto evened the score with 6:30 remaining on the clock.
Buwalda came up huge with the unassisted game-winner with 3:18 to go to secure the Blues second straight victory.
His five goals led all players, while Masson added two on the day. Tingle and Ben Hayes had single tallies in the win.
The Varsity Blues return home next Saturday, September 28 as they host the Guelph Gryphons at Varsity Centre. Game time is set for 5 p.m.Â
