BADGERS BUMP BLUES IN A SHOOT OUT

Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team wrapped up their 2012-13 regular season with a 3-2 shoot out loss to the visiting Brock Badgers on Saturday, February 9 at Varsity Arena.

Despite the loss, the Blues (15-8-3) finish the season fifth in the OUA, and will face either the Western Mustangs or the Queen’s Gaels in the first round of the playoffs starting next week.

Rookie forward Taylor Day (Ilderton, Ont.) and Jacqueline Scheffel (Waubaushene, Ont.) scored for the Blues, with Day’s goal being her sixth point in the last four games for the Blueand White. Team captain Kelly O’Hanlon (Markham) came into today’s action sixth in the OUA’s scoring race, and added an assist in this one to finish the season atop the team with 27 points in 26 games. Day finishes her rookie campaign second on the team in points with 19.

Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) made 25 saves in her 15th start of the season.

After a scoreless first period, the Blues pressured in the second, outshooting their opponents 13-5, but wound up down by two after a couple of goals.

The Badgers picked up the first goal just under two minutes into the period, on a long shot from Jaclyn Conacher that took an unfortunate bounce of Kesteris’ blocker and found its way into the net. Then, after a Blues turnover inside their own zone, Laura Neu capitalized to make it 2-0 in favour of Brock.

The Blues wouldn’t quit however, and continued to fire in the third until Day finally got Toronto on the board midway through the period. After a vigorous forecheck from Amanda Ricker (Ottawa), Day pounced on a loose puck in the slot and threw it high over Badger’s keeper Claire Shaw.

Scheffel tied the game up just four minutes later on a perfectly executed faceoff play. O’Hanlon won the draw back to her defenceman, who fired the puck on goal, where it was kicked around in the crease before Scheffel found it and buried it off the back crossbar to knot the game at 2-2.

Overtime solved nothing and sent the game to a shootout, where Badgers captain Maja Samborski scored the lone goal to give Brock the win.

Shaw made 34 saves for Brock in the win.

The Blues honoured graduating players Kaitlyn Bannon (Stratford, Ont.) and Callie Bazak (Peterborough) in a pre-game ceremony. Bazak finished her final season with the Blues as the team’s leading goal scorer with 13 on the season.

The Blues await the completion of the regular season to determine their first round opponents. Toronto will face the fourth place team in the OUA, either the Western Mustangs (17-5-2) or the Queen’s Gaels (19-3-2).
