BLUES CAN’T SOLVE CAMPBELL

Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell 2-0 to the No. 10 Western Mustangs in Game 1 of their OUA quarter-final series on Wednesday night at Thompson arena.

It’s do or die for the Blues as they host Game 2 on Friday, February 15 at Varsity Arena. The game will be streamed live on SSN and live stats will be available when the puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Game 3, if necessary, is back at Thompson Arena in London at 4 p.m.

Despite outshooting Western 29-18, the Blues were unable to put one past sophomore goaltender Kelly Campbell (St. Thomas, Ont.). Blues netminder Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) posted 16 saves in the loss.

The Mustangs opened the scoring midway through the first frame as second-year forward Brittany Clapham (Tottenham, Ont.) made good on a breakaway attempt, deking the puck through Kesteris. Western almost had another breakaway opportunity towards the end of the frame, but veteran defenceman Marlie McLaughlin (Ottawa) was there to clear the puck out of harms way.

After a scoreless second period, Clapham notched her second goal of the game 6:53 into the third. Despite 1:39 of 6-on-5, U of T couldn’t find the back of the net.

The University of Toronto is the proud host of the 2013 CIS women's hockey championship, March 7-10, at Varsity Arena.
