Box Score Third-year forward Sonja Weidenfelder scored in the fifth round of the shootout to give the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team a 3-2 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday afternoon in Oshawa, Ont.
Toronto's second win of the weekend improves their record to 9-3-1 as they remain in fourth place in the competitive OUA standings.
A Toronto native, Weidenfelder was the only player to score in a five-round shoot out, giving the Blues their first shootout victory of the season.
First-year goaltender Michaela Logan of North Vancouver posted 30 saves, and added five more stops in the shootout to earn her second win in three starts this season.
After a scoreless first period, UOIT's Mikaeli Cavell found the back of the net on a powerplay seven minutes into the second. Sophomore standout Taylor Day of Ilderton, Ont., evened the score for the Blues just over three minutes later with a goal assisted by team captain Kelly O'Hanlon.
The Ridgebacks took the lead back with their second powerplay goal of the game, this time from Jill Morillo. UOIT held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.
O'Hanlon quickly tied the game again with a shorthanded marker just 1:44 into the third frame. The Blues had a couple of chances to net the winner with a late powerplay opportunity in the third and a few chances in the final minutes of overtime, but needed the shootout to secure the victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, November 30 as they host the Laurentian Voyageurs at Varsity Arena. Advanced tickets are on sale
