WOMEN’S HOCKEY SOLID IN WIN OVER LIONS

Box Score Five different players scored as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the York Lions 5-2 on Friday night (Nov. 22) at Canlan Ice Sports.

With the win, the Blues improve to 8-3-1 and remain in fourth place in the OUA standings, just five points out of first place.

The Lions opend the scoring 9:18 into the game with a goal off the stick of Erin Cameron, but the Blues bounced right back as fourth-year forward Amanda Ricker found the back of the net just over five minutes later.

The Blues took the lead for good on the powerplay late in the first period when Jacqueline Scheffel potted her first goal of the season. U of T led 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.

Courtney Brind'Amour-McClure extended the Blues lead 3:03 into the second frame, but the Lions brought the game back within reach when Amy Locke found a way past U of T netminder Nicole Kesteris. Toronto held the 3-2 advantage heading into the final frame.

U of T put the game away for good with two goals three minutes apart midway through the third. Alie Brind'Amour-McClure scored Toronto's fourth goal, with Arden Cowley netting the fifth in the 5-2 victory.

Kesteris (Aurora) posted 24 saves in the victory.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow afternoon as they head to Oshawa, Ont., to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
