Second-year forward Taylor Day notched two goals in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team to a dominant 2-0 win over the No. 6 Western Mustangs on Friday night (Nov. 1) at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 5-1-1 and move into fourth place, one points behind the Queen's Gaels (5-0-2), Guelph Gryphons (6-2-0) and Mustangs (6-2-0), who are all tied for first. Â It was the first two-goal performance in Day's career and the second time that the Blues have defeated a nationally ranked team (Guelph, Oct. 10) this season.
Day (Ilderton, Ont.) opened the scoring 11:52 into the game as she wired the puck over Western goalie Jessica Campbell's glove. Â The Blues outshot the Mustangs 14-5 and led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.
The Mustangs had chances to even the score on a couple of 2-on-1 opportunities early in the second period, but Blues defencemen Mary Claire Geneau and Caitlin Maikawa stood their ground to allow Kesteris the easy save.
Day added her second of the night midway through the second period. The kinesiology major received a beautiful pass from team captain Kelly O'Hanlon, split the Western defence and made no mistake, beating Campbell top glove again to give the Blues the 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs put on the pressure in the third period but numerous blocked shots and saves from Kesteris preserved the lead. Western spoiled the shut out on a 6-on-5 advantage with 24 seconds left with a goal off the stick of Stacey Scott. Â
Kesteris posted 24 saves in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 4 p.m. Advanced tickets are on sale here. The game will also be streamed live at GoBlues.tv.Â
