Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to the visiting UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday, October 5 at Varsity Arena.
The Blues are now 1-1 on the season, having defeated the Ryerson Rams in their season opener earlier in the week.
Alie Brind-Amour-McClure (Waterdown, Ont.) had the lone Blues goal, scoring for her second straight game, and picking up her third point of the season. Her twin sister Courtney, and Ottawa native Amanda Ricker also picked up their third points of the season, assisting on the first period goal.
Fourth-year goaltender Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) was solid again despite the loss, making 18 saves with not an easy one among them.
The Blues came out strong for the second straight game, generating most of the chances in the first half of the opening period. The Ridgebacks would strike first however, as team captain Jill Morillo managed to sneak a shot through Kesteris at the tail end of the powerplay.
Just under a minute later the Blues responded. After Ricker held the puck in the zone on a tenacious forecheck, the Brind'Amour-McClure twins found themselves with a 2-on-1 down low. Courtney dished to Alie who snapped it past Ridgebacks goaltender Tori Campbell to tie the game at 13:29.
The game remained even through a slew of penalties in the middle frame, as both teams failed to convert on numerous powerplay opportunities. The two teams combined for 56 penalty minutes in the game, but only generated one powerplay goal, as both goaltenders were stellar.
Taylor Day had the Blues best chance to break the tie in the third period, when she made a spectacular toe drag move around the Ridgebacks defender and just missed the net.
Then with just over two minutes remaining, Nicole LoPresti finished off a centering feed from Samantha Forchielli to put the Ridgebacks ahead 2-1.
UOIT would hang on for the final few minutes to grab their second win of the young season. They are now 2-0 after defeating the defending OUA champion Queen's Gaels last night.
Rookie goaltender Tori Campbell made 22 saves to earn the win.
The Blues return to action next Thursday, October 10 when they travel to Guelph to take on the Gryphons. Puck drop is 7:30 pm.
