BLUES LANCE WINDSOR, KEEP STREAK ALIVE

Box Score Brittany Kirby notched the shoot out winner as the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 2-1 on Saturday, January 26 at South Windsor Arena.

The win, their fourth straight, lifts Toronto (13-8-1) into fifth place, two points ahead of the Lancers (11-8-3).

After a scoreless first period, Varsity Blues team captain and leading goal scorer Kelly O’Hanlon (Markham, Ont.) got the Blues on the board with an unassisted tally, her second shorthanded marker of the season. U of T carried the one-goal lead into the third period.

Windsor’s Ally Strickland evened the score with 7:48 remaining in regulation time. The Lancers dominated the overtime period, registering five shots on Blues netminder Nicole Kesteris (Aurora, Ont.) to Toronto’s none.

Blues forward Courtney Tougas and Lancers Jenny MacKnight each scored as the game remained deadlocked after the first three shooters. Kirby (Vancouver) scored as U of T’s fourth shooter and Kesteris denied Windsor’s Candace Kourounis to seal the win.

Kesteris posted 26 saves in her seventh win of the season.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow as they head to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
