BLUES EDGE RAMS IN THIRD-STRAIGHT WIN

Box Score Callie Bazak’s two goals powered the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Ryerson Rams in the sixth annual Think Pink game on Sunday, January 20 at Varsity Arena.

The win improves the Blues record to 12-8-1 on the season, and moves them within four points of Western for fourth-place in the OUA.

Bazak (Peterborough, Ont.) led the attack with two goals, and team captain Kelly O’Hanlon (Markham) put up three assists to bring her team-leading total to 23 points on the season. Toronto native Sonja Weidenfelder also scored, while defenceman Stacey Oue (Scarborough) grabbed the game-winner.

Sophomore goaltender Krista Funke (Regina) got the nod between the pipes, and made 26 saves for the win.

Despite being outshot in the opening frame, the Blues struck first on Weidenfelder’s tally. O’Hanlon corralled the puck at the side of the net, and dished it cross-crease to the second-year forward, who tapped it in. O’Hanlon then showcased her passing skills again late in the period, on a powerplay, firing a pass through the seam to Bazak who one-timed the puck past Ram’s goalie Emma Crawley to make it 2-0 in favour of the Blues.

Ryerson would fight back in the second period, scoring two goals just twenty-five seconds apart to tie the game. They then added a third unanswered goal on a deflection from Samantha Pui to grab a 3-2 lead.

But the Blues refused to quit, and at 4:27 of the second, Jacqueline Sheffel (Waubaushene, Ont.) intercepted a clearing attempt and fired a pass across the ice to Bazak who finished the play for her second goal of the game, to tie it at 3-3.

The Blues then earned themselves a powerplay opportunity early in the third, and Stacey Oue snuck in from the point and managed to control another great pass from O’Hanlon before roofing a backhand for the eventual game-winner.

Samantha Pui finished the game with three points (one goal, two assists) for Ryerson.

The Blues next game is Saturday January 26th in Windsor Ontario, against the Windsor Lancers. Game time is scheduled for 4:10 p.m.
