Box Score The Varsity Blues football team suffered a 62-7 loss to the Western Mustangs on Saturday, September 8 at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
On a day where nothing went their way, third-year Blues receiver Cody Rossi of Vancouver broke the shut out with 1:22 to go in the game on a nine-yard reception from rookie quarterback Chris Jugovic (Burlington, Ont.).
The Blues could only muster 177 yards on the day, compared to the Mustangs 596. The flags were flying as both teams combined for 259 yards in penalties. Toronto was whistled for 15 penalties for 135 yards, while Western received 11 penalties for 125 yards, a total of 26 penalties on the day.
Jugovic came into the game in the second half and went 5-for-16 and 62 yards and one major. Sophomore quarterback Richard Quittenton (Ajax, Ont.) was 5-for-10 and 53 yards through the first 30 minutes of action.
Rookie running back Ashton Nelson (Brampton, Ont.) once again led the charge with 51 yards rushing, while Alex Pierzchalski mustered 37 yards on three catches in front of his hometown crowd in London, Ont.
First-year defensive back John Connors of Barrie, Ont., as well as veteran linebacker Chris Johnson (Scarborough, Ont.) led the Blues with seven tackles each in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return home next Saturday, September 15 as they host the No. 7 Windsor Lancers in the annual Shriner’s Game at Varsity Centre. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
