The Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team came up big in Guelph, recording a 9-8 win over the Queen’s Gaels and a 10-6 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday, September 29.
With the wins, the Varsity Blues improve to 2-4 on the season.
Veteran attacker Susan Tung (Peterborough, Ont.) scored two goals and added three assists, while Katie McCurdy had a team-high three goals over the Gaels. The Orillia, Ont., native opened the scoring and notched three of Toronto’s first four goals of the game. Megan Shea (North Bay, Ont.) and Kaitlyn Sandy (Six Nations) also scored as the Blues and Gaels remained tied 5-5 heading into halftime.
Down 7-6 with just over 20 minutes to go, the Blues and Gaels exchanged goals before Tung notched the eventual game-winner with 9:17 remaining. Queen’s added one more with just over four minutes remaining but the Blues held on for the win.
Tung again led the Blues, scoring a game-high four goals, in their second game of the day over UOIT. The Blues managed to build a 6-4 lead at halftime with three goals from Tung and single tallies from McCurdy, Sandy and Kelly Robinson.
Three quick goals to start the second half would secure a strong lead as McCurdy, Sandy and Robinson each tallied their second goals of the game. Tung added a late marker to secure the dominant 10-6 victory.
The Varsity Blues return to the field tomorrow as they take on the McGill Martlets in Guelph, Ont. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m.
