The Varsity Blues men’s soccer team came away with a 3-2 victory over the Trent Excalibur on Wednesday, September 19 at Varsity Centre.
With the win, the Blues get back to .500 and advance to fourth place with an 3-3-0 record, while the Trent Excalibur drop to 1-4-1 placing them sixth overall in the OUA East division.
One of the most impressive moments of the game came right off the bat in the fifth minute of the match, as first-year striker Adrian Dannel (Maloney Gardens) left his defenders in the dust and rifled a shot into the back of the net.
However the lead was short-lived as Bowmanville, Ont., native Devon Coutu evened up the scoring just before the end of the half.
Tied at 1-1 the entire game proved to be an epic sea-saw battle. The Blues went ahead as Woodbridge, Ont., native Mario Kovacevic scored on the 50th minute from a beautiful pass from Dannel. Soon to follow was Killian Elkinson, who notched the eventual game-winner with a great shot in the 70th minute, assisted by Fanny Bay, B.C., native Dylan Bams.
Despite a 3-1 lead, Trent refused to settle, with endless attempts of rallying back. This effort translated into a late goal Joey Azzarello (Cobourg, Ont.) in the 80th minute on a shot that just got by Blues goalkeeper Anthony Spanopulos.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Sunday, September 23 when they take on the Ryerson Rams at Birchmount Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
