The Varsity Blues men’s lacrosse team notched their first win of the season with a 12-11 overtime victory versus the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday, September 16 at Varsity Centre.
Toronto got off to a dominant start and built a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. Second-year middie Jordan Robertson (Toronto) scored three goals in the first frame to lead the Blues.
The Voyageurs bounced back in a big way in the second quarter, outscoring the Blues 6-1 to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.
After some back-and-forth battles, U of T rallied with three late goals in the third to take a 10-9 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Both teams fought hard to open the fourth quarter, but it was the Voyageurs who would strike next, tallying two goals in less than three minutes to take a 11-10 lead. The Blues did not give up and in dramatic fashion third-year middie Michael Buwalda evened the score with just one second remaining on the clock to force overtime.
Robertson proved to be the hero, scoring the lone overtime goal to secure the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, September 21 when they host the Western Mustangs at Varsity Centre. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
