STAIRS SISTERS LEAD BLUES IN WIN OVER WARRIORS

The OUA defending champion Varsity Blues field hockey team opened their 2012 campaign with a 2-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, September 15 in Waterloo, Ont.

Despite a scoreless first half, the Blues came out strong in the second half with better transfers and scoring opportunities.

Third-year midfielder Tegan Stairs (Kitchener, Ont.) got the Blues on the board in the 38th minute. Her sister, Emma, notched Toronto’s second goal in the 48th minute. Both goals were assisted by third-year standout Alex Thicke (North Vancouver, B.C.).

Veteran defender Kelley Lusk played a solid game, stopping several breakaway attemps, with newcomer Henriette Mansell also posting a solid effort.

The Varsity Blues return to the field tomorrow, Sunday, September 16, as they take on the Queen’s Gaels in Waterloo, Ont.
