The OUA defending champion Varsity Blues field hockey team opened their 2012 campaign with a 2-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, September 15 in Waterloo, Ont.
 
Despite a scoreless first half, the Blues came out strong in the second half with better transfers and scoring opportunities.
 
Third-year midfielder Tegan Stairs (Kitchener, Ont.) got the Blues on the board in the 38^th minute. Her sister, Emma, notched Toronto’s second goal in the 48^th minute. Both goals were assisted by third-year standout Alex Thicke (North Vancouver, B.C.).
 
Veteran defender Kelley Lusk played a solid game, stopping several breakaway attemps, with newcomer Henriette Mansell also posting a solid effort.
 
The Varsity Blues return to the field tomorrow, Sunday, September 16, as they take on the Queen’s Gaels in Waterloo, Ont.
