Fourth-year defensive back Kevin Kinahan is coming off a breakout season, posting 20 solo tackles and earning an invitation to last season’s East West Bowl. Kevin gives fans an inside scoop on the 2012 Varsity Blues football season in ‘Kevin’s Critique’.
Alright, so it’s been about a week since my last “critique” so I have to do some backtracking so you can all be up to speed.
First off, our trip to Montreal to face Concordia was a great experience for the team. The time on the bus and in the hotel allowed for guys to get to know everyone and allow the team to form a tighter bond. It’s awesome having the guys interacting with one another and seeing the awkwardness at the beginning of camp disappear.
Most importantly, the trip showed that this team can play great football. In the game, we started off a little slow and let Concordia take an early lead on us but after some adjustments the team was able to regain composure. Quarterback Simon Nassar and running back Ashton Nelson lead the offence down the field, ultimately allowing fullback Stephan “La Dumba” Boroniec to score two touchdowns. Obviously a shout out is needed for offensive linemen Aaron Wheaton, Shawn Horrigan, Jason Harrison, Lawrence Hopper, Jesse Raycroft and Mario Tedesco for winning the battle in the trenches and making it possible for the team to make big plays.
Another highlight of the game was rookie quarterback Chris Jugovic, who looked very composed for his first CIS football game and was able to throw a beautiful touchdown pass to Paul de Pass. Unfortunately, the game took a turn for the worse as Concordia was able to score late to win the game. Losing always sucks but there were many positives taken from the game. For me, the biggest one was how we showed that no team in the country will push us around. We went into this game with only three days of practices compared to Concordia’s two weeks and showed that we are full of heart and toughness and could compete with them.
After returning from Montreal we finished up training camp with a team scrimmage and the last power practices. It’s always a great feeling knowing that the early mornings and four hour practices are behind us and that it is now time to focus our attention to the season.
This now brings me to my last and most important bit of information....WE ARE PLAYING LAURIER ON MONDAY AT VARSITY CENTRE!!! We’ve already started preparation to face the Golden Hawks and are ready to show what we can do! I hope to see all you Blues fans out this Monday as we are hoping to have the stadium at capacity. Make sure to be loud and show Laurier what school has the best fans!
