BLUES FOOTBALL BLOG: KEVIN'S CRITIQUE 2

Fourth-year defensive back Kevin Kinahan is coming off a breakout season, posting 20 solo tackles and earning an invitation to last season’s East West Bowl. Kevin gives fans an inside scoop on the 2012 Varsity Blues football season in ‘Kevin’s Critique’.

Three days of practice are complete and already there have been great improvements and highlights from camp.

The rookies have been listening to the coaches and are applying tips given during the film sessions to get noticed throughout training camp. It is never easy being a rookie for a university football team and at times things can be overwhelming.  These guys are trying to get used to a level of play that is much faster and much more complicated then what they were used to in high school. Not only that but they have to adjust to not being the star player anymore. Even with all of these obstacles the rookies have been steadily improving and are ready to contribute on game day.

As expected, training camp has provided some great competition. For me personally, having to face receivers like Paul de Pass and Alex Pierzchalski every single day is making me a better player and making sure I bring my best every single play.

The battle between the O and D line has been great to watch. The offensive line has been playing tough physical football while the boys on the defensive line are flying around forcing pressure and causing havoc. If I was playing quarterback, the mere size of guys like Everton Williams and James Bodanis would have me running to the sidelines but Rich, Simon and all the young QB’s are playing with no fear and making some nice throws.

Finally, I have to give a shout out to linebacker Broc Elliot. For the first time in probably two years he decided not to practice with his usual hoodie under his equipment. Don’t worry, you read that last sentence correctly.

The team is now off to Montreal to face the University of Concordia in an exhibition game. Even though this game does not count in terms of standings, it is extremely important for us to show that we are a team that should not be overlooked. It is a great way to show everyone that this team BLEEDS BLUE!
