BLUES EDGE OUT BIG WIN OVER LANCERS

Second-year goaltender Nicole Kesteris posted 48 saves in leading the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team to a 2-1 win over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon at South Windsor Arena.

The win, Toronto’s fourth in the last five games, moves them into sole possession third place with a 13-9-1 record.

Fifth-year forward and Scarborough, Ont., native Amanda Fawns opened the scoring midway through the second period with a powerplay goal, assisted by fellow assistant captain Kelly O’Hanlon (Markham, Ont.).

Fawns returned the favour 6:03 into the third frame, setting O’Hanlon up for the eventual game-winner, her fifth of the season.

Windsor’s Candace Kourounis would spoil the shut out with a powerplay marker with 49 seconds remaining in the game.  Windsor went 1-for-12 on the man advantage, with Toronto converting on 1-of-9 attempts.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m.
