BLUES DROP GAME 2 IN LONDON

The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team closed out their 2011-12 campaign with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Western Mustangs in OUA quarter-final action on Saturday night (Feb. 18) in London, Ont.

Fifth-year forward Brenley Jorgensen of Kingston, Ont., scored both of Toronto’s goals, each on the powerplay.

The Mustangs opened the scoring just 1:09 into the game with a goal off the stick of Katherine Dillon.  Jorgensen would even the score with just over five minutes to go in the second period as she poked in a puck under Olivia Ross’s pad in front of the net.

The Blues went ahead 2-1 8:44 into the third frame as Jorgensen jumped on another rebound to find the back of the net.

Western would even the score with 2:56 remaining as Lindsay Gidomski found herself all by herself on the back post and one-timed the puck into the wide open net.

Mustangs forward Carly Rolph was the overtime hero, scoring the home team’s second powerplay goal of the game 3:33 into the extra frame to secure Western’s berth into the semi-final round.

Rookie goaltender Krista Funke made 39 saves in the loss.
