NO. 10 GRYPHONS GET PAST BLUES

Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell 3-2 to the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 18) at Gryphon Centre Arena.

The loss drops Toronto to 8-4-1 as they remain tied with the Western Mustangs for fifth place in the highly competitive OUA standings. Guelph improves to 9-3-2 and moves into third place.

Second-year forward Jacqueline Scheffel (Waubaushene, Ont.) opened the scoring midway through the first period with a powerplay goal assisted by Amanda Ricker (Ottawa) and Callie Bazak (Peterborough, Ont.).

The Gryphons took a quick 2-1 lead early in the second period with goals from Kaitlyn Mora and Amanda Parkins. Guelph extended their lead to two with 7:01 to go in the game, when team captain Tamara Bell found a hole through Blues netminder Krista Funke (Regina).

The Blues rallied late in the frame, with Bazak bringing the game within one with just 22 seconds remaining; however, it was too little, too late.

Funke posted 27 saves in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action and finish their six-game road stretch next Friday, November 23 when they travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the Queen’s Gaels. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
