HAWKS EDGE BLUES BY NARROWEST OF MARGINS

Box Score The No. 5 Laurier Golden Hawks scored with 3:52 remaining as the Varsity Blues dropped a 3-2 decision on Saturday afternoon at Sun Life Arena in Waterloo, Ont.

The loss drops the Blues (7-3-1) into a tie for fourth place with the Western Mustangs (7-2-1), while Laurier and Queen’s remain atop the OUA standings with identical 9-1-1 records.

Fourth-year defenceman Marlie McLaughlin (Ottawa) opened the scoring 4:42 into the contest as she beat Laurier netminder Erika Thunder to notch her first goal of the season. The Blues maintained the 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of action.

Laurier evened the score early in the second frame with a goal off the stick of Geneva Kliman and the two teams remained deadlocked heading into the final period.

Rookie forward Taylor Day of Ilderton, Ont., put the Blues ahead just 44 seconds into the third period; however, Laurier responded five minutes later to even the score. Emily Kekewich notched her first-career goal, the game-winner, to secure Laurier’s third straight win.

Second-year Blues goaltender Krista Funke (Regina) posted 24 saves in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Saturday, November 17 as they head to St. Catharines, Ont., to take on the Brock Badgers. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
