Box Score The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team fell 2-1 in a shoot out to the Ryerson Rams in their 2012-13 season opener on Friday night (Oct. 5) at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Ryerson’s Emily Rose Galliani Pecchia proved to be the hero, securing the game-equalizer early in the second period and notching the game-winner in the sixth round of the sudden death shoot out.
The Blues opened the scoring early as Ragan Danford (Madoc, Ont.) found the back of the net on a delayed penalty call just four minutes into the game. Toronto carried that 1-0 advantage into the second period.
Galliani Pecchia got the home team on the board three minutes into the second period, sending a shot from the point through traffic to beat Blues goaltender Krista Funke (Regina). The Rams outshot the Blues 15-4 in the second frame; however, the game remained tied 1-1 heading into the final stanza.
After a scoreless third period, the game headed into overtime, with both teams seeing opportunities to score. Rams forward Melissa Wronzberg was denied by Funke on an early break away, before Blues veteran Callie Bazak wired a shot off Ryerson goalie Brianna Tremblay’s mask just moments later.
The Varsity Blues will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon in their 2012-13 home opener versus the Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
The University of Toronto is the proud host of the 2013 CIS women’s hockey championship, March 7-10, at Varsity Arena.
