BLUES BOOK TICKET TO OUA FINAL

The Varsity Blues field hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 4-0 in OUA semi-final action to earn a spot in their sixth consecutive OUA final tomorrow at Warrior Field in Waterloo, Ont.

The Blues will face the Guelph Gryphons in tomorrow’s gold-medal game, scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. Guelph defeated the Western Mustangs 4-1 to earn their spot in the final.

Toronto has met the Guelph Gryphons in six OUA championship finals since 2005, with each team claiming three titles.

After a shaky start, third-year forward Alex Thicke (North Vancouver) opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a goal off a corner opportunity. The Blues held the narrow 1-0 advantage at the half.

Second-year midfielder Rachel Fackoury of Maryhill, Ont., extended Toronto’s lead with another goal from a corner in the 40th minute. Thicke would put the game out of reach with a penalty stroke marker in the 56th minute and OUA all-star Tegan Stairs rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 58th minute.

The University of Toronto is the proud host of the 2012 CIS field hockey championship, Nov. 1-4, at Varsity Centre. Toronto and Guelph, as well as Canada West’s UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes, will be joined by the OUA bronze medalist next week.
