Fifth-year forwards Karolina Urban and Brenley Jorgensen tallied three points apiece as the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the Brock Badgers 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Seymour Hannah Centre in St. Catharines, Ont.
The win lifts Toronto (12-9-1) into a tie for third place with the Queen’s Gaels. First-year Blues goaltender Krista Funke of Regina made 31 saves in the win.
“We showed a lot of character being down by two goals after the first period,” said Varsity Blues head coach Vicky Sunohara. “We came back and won the second and third. Funke came through with some key saves in the third to preserve the win.”
The Badgers opened the scoring 2:37 into the game when rookie defenceman Brittney Cabral set up Sara Brady for her third goal of the season. A minute later, the Badgers doubled their lead when Webb scored her sixth of the season on assists from Brianne Veale and Katie Howlett.
The Varsity Blues cut the lead in half 6:50 into the second period when Jacqueline Scheffel of Waubaushene, Ont., banged a rebound past Badgers freshman goaltender Emily Kelly (Port Elgin, Ont.).
The Badgers made the score 3-1 on the powerplay at 11:42 of the second period when Jessica Fickel scored her team-leading 13th goal on an assist from Leigh Vanderveen.
At 17:52, Varsity Blues team captain Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) narrowed the gap to 3-2 with a powerplay strike.
The Blues tied the game midway through the third period when fifth-year forward Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) beat Kelly with a shot from the slot.
Two minutes later, freshman Sonja Weidenfelder (Toronto , Ont.) tipped in a shot to give the Varsity Blues a 4-3 lead.
The Badgers had three powerplay opportunities in the last six minutes of the game and created multiple scoring chances but could not beat Funke as the Blues held on for the win.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Saturday, February 4 when they travel to Windsor to take on the Lancers. Game time is set for 4:10 p.m.
